Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is an electronic device designed to read Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and authenticate voters – using the voters’ fingerprints – in order to prove that they are eligible to vote at a particular polling unit.

BVAS usage entails either scanning the barcode/QR code on the PVC/Voter’s register or entering the last six digits of the Voter Identity Number or typing in the last name of the voter by the Assistant Presiding Officer (APO 1) to verify and authenticate the voter.

The INEC Results Viewing (IReV) portal is a dedicated web portal for the public to view polling unit results as soon as they are finalised on election day.

What Peter Obi Said

When speaking about the BVAS in the viral video, Peter Obi was attempting to use the device that had trouble uploading the results on election day.

The anchor responded by claiming that the IREV, not the BVAS, was at fault.

In the viral video, she said, “That is IREV, the BVAS accredits people and takes pictures for the IREV but it didn’t work that day. I just had to make that clarification because you know that the BVAS is also going to be used.”

Peter Obi, in his response, said, “Yes, both of us understand that, but for the average Nigerians who may not understand, what they told us is that the result will be from BVAS to another thing. They promised us a sumptuous meal but disappeared with the meal.”
