Details of Governor Nyesome wike’s meeting with three governors of the All Progressives Congress has been revealed, ENigeria Newspaper reports.
Its no news that three governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress – APC namely, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo visited Rivers State Governor Nyesome Wike on Friday afternoon in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The widely publicized visit to Wike happened after a media report revealed few days ago that the Rivers State governor had a secret meeting with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in France; which was subsequently denied by the later’s camp during the week.
Even though Wike’s closed meeting with the APC governors was in closed door without the media in attendance, ENigeria Newspaper is now privy to some of the key issues discussed.
According to a report by Punch, a source at the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the APC governors told Wike to join them in their quest to win the 2023 presidential election.
The source said, “The plan is to woo him to our side since his party seems to be ignoring him. We asked him to work with us.”
The insider responded, “Well, you don’t expect him to jump at the offer,” when asked what Wike’s reaction was. This is due to the fact that his party, particularly in his state, already had a candidate for every elective seat. However, we want him to collaborate with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, our presidential candidate. But he made no commitment to us.
They paid the governor a visit a few weeks after Governor Dave Umahi, another APC official, paid him a visit and met with him in private. The meeting’s specifics were unknown, but it is assumed that the elections in 2023 will also be discussed. Prior to the party primaries, there were open disputes between Umahi and Wike.
Also another insider who spoke exclusively to ENigeria Newspaper divulged that internally the APC had considered striking an understanding with Wike to support Tinubu’s presidency in 2023 while the party in return would support him to successfully install his successor as the next governor of Rivers State.
As at the time of filing this report, it is unclear if that option was also discussed in the meeting with Wike yesterday, but information available reveals that issues as it concerns 2023 elections were majorly in discuss during the meeting.
Wike is reportedly unhappy with the results of the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential primaries, which saw Atiku Abubakar win the nomination while he finished as the first runner-up. The pick of Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Delta State, as Atiku’s running mate is also believed to have irked the governor despite the committee’s favoritism of Okowa.
The primary’s aftermath caused a severe rift within the party, with some members who were thought to be loyal to Wike demanding for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman, and the replacement of Okowa’s name with Wike as the running mate.
Also, the absence of Atiku, who has been on vacation abroad, is also reported to be escalating the situation because many people think he ought to have met Wike in person and played a crucial role in bringing the party together before things got out of hand.
Accordingly, it is believed that the APC is attempting to court the governor, who is seen by many as prominent and a mobilizer, by using the opposition party’s escalating crises and Atiku’s absence as an advantage.
