Bayelsa Gov alleges Buhari administration did not commission any project in state

In his eight years in government, outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari, according to Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, did not launch any new projects in the state.

He made this statement at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa’s virtual inauguration and handover event. The complex has the name of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, whose administration began the building in 2011.

Diri said, “While it is good that the Federal Government completed some of the projects started by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, we want to place it on record that for the past eight years, we never saw one new project in Bayelsa State.”

He emphasised that the cost of building a kilometre of standard road in Bayelsa could be used to build four or more kilometres of the same grade of road elsewhere in the country, noting that the Federal Government had seen firsthand the relatively high cost of carrying out infrastructural projects in the state.

The Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Federal Secretariat, which was initially estimated to cost N2.5 billion, had to undergo a cost variation after the devastating flood of 2012, according to the governor, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Diri expressed hope that, with this experience, the Federal Government would henceforth be more cautious in matters of project cost evaluation and execution in Bayelsa State.

He, however, commended the Buhari-led regime for completing key infrastructural projects it inherited from the administration of Jonathan across the country.
