Anambra Airport update 2021: It is no doubt that the hottest topic in the Nigerian Aviation sector right now is the Anambra International Airport also known as the Anambra Cargo Airport.
The airport which boasts of cutting edge modern technology and rated second best in Africa is reportedly billed to kick off operations in April 30, 2021.
However, E-nigeria! Takes a look at some quick facts you need to know about the Governor Willie Obiano’s legacy project and to bring you the Anambra Airport update 20121, come with us…
The Anambra Cargo Airport is located at Umueri or better stilled pronounced Umuleri, a neighbouring community with Governor Willie Obiano’s home town of Aguleri. In fact according to historians, Aguleri and Umuleri are brothers, meaning that the airport is almost a walkable distance from the governor’s ancestral home.
It is true that to access the new Anambra Airport located in Umuleri community, a suburb off the commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra State; the need for a good access road cannot be overly emphasized. However of great concern is the fact that the road from Onitsha GRA to 33 Housing Estate, which should have been the shortest route to the airport is a death trap.
For a multi-million dollar investment like the Anambra airport it is sad that access road may become a major challenge.
Over the years, one factor synonymous to the Aguleri and Umuleri people has been incessant communal clashes.
From time to time, both communities are often embroiled in serious wars that leave many dead, countless persons injured and many more homeless. For instance in January 2021 another crisis erupted resulting into multiple casualties.
As operations kick off at the Anambra Cargo Airpot is worthy of note that the rising concern of insecurity in the South-East capped with the pre-dominant Aguleri-Umuleri crisis may be a major encumbrance.
Commendations and accolades have not stopped pouring in for Governor Willie Obiano following the Anambra Airport project.
In an assessment visit by members of the National Assembly joint committee, Senators Smart Adeyemi and Uche Ekwunife showered encomiums on Obiano and rated the Anambra International Airport second after Lagos which contributes 65 percent to Nigeria Aviation Industry. According to the Senators, the Committee would go back and look at areas the Federal Government can be of assistance to the Anambra State government on the project.
Speaking on the technical details of the Anambra Cargo Airport, Mr. Marcel Afejiofor narrated that “The airport runway has 06, 024, with a length of 3.7klm, width 60 metres, 45 metres carriage way and 15 metres shoulders and the category is 4F, meaning it can take any Airbus,
He goes further, “The orientation is that you can land on two sides, you can land on 06 or 024, and it has category two lights and satellite landing system, one-kilometer racer to take care of overrun.
Governor Obiano also averred that the Anambra International Airport is the only airport in Nigeria with a satellite landing system. According to him, “We did that deliberately because the airport is going to be one of the busiest in Africa because of the orientation of our people who are business people and travelers.”
Those are five quick facts and Anambra Airport update 2021 more to come.
