During APGA rally in Anambra, unknown gunmen held Governor Obiano convoy hostage ENigeria Newspaper reports on Tuesday.
Unidentified gunmen stormed Odoata Central School in Ihiala, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was set to conduct its rally on Tuesday, sources narrates to Nigerian Newspaper.
APGA rally in Anambra was about to commence in the region when the unknown gunmen arrived, just as the governor’s convoy arrived, and the gunmen engaged the security agents in the governor’s vehicle.
“The governor’s convoy was halted for approximately an hour while gunfire rang out throughout the region,” according to a source.
Meanwhile, DSP Toochukwu Ikenganyia, the Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed that an attack had occurred in Ihiala.
“The attack happened at Odoata Central School, next to St Martins Church in Ihiala,” he stated. It occurred around 9:30 a.m.
“From the attackers, we discovered one AK-47 rifle, two magazines with 30 rounds of ammo, and a Toyota Hilux vehicle.
“Police and military personnel are currently on the ground conducting mop-up operations. “Since then, normalcy has restored to the area,” stated PPRO Ikenga.
When approached, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Mr C. Don Adinuba, acknowledged the report but refused to discuss the governor’s assassination.
“This afternoon, a combined team of policemen and soldiers repelled an attack by unknown gunmen at Odoata Primary School in Ihiala, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance – APGA rally in Anambra was set to hold for the November 6 gubernatorial election in the State,” he added.
“The gunmen arrived on motorcycles and in three vehicles: a Toyota Lexus 350 ES with registration number EKY 765 EX, a Toyota RAV4 with registration number JJJ 434FP, and a Ford van whose number could not be determined at the time of this report because it caught fire during the gunfight between the gunmen and security forces.”
“The gunmen, unable to fight the soldiers’ and police officers’ superior firepower, dashed inside the enormous facilities of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, which is right across the street from the campaign grounds.
According to an eye witness who did not want his identity published in the media for fear of his safety, “they sustained terrible injuries even though they managed to shoot a valiant soldier,” Adinuba added.
