Charles Soludo, Andy Uba, Ifeanyi Ubah, Valentine Ozigbo, ENigeria Newspaper takes a look at their highs nd lows before the Anambra election.
The stage has been set for the battle to succeed Willie Obiano as governor of Anambra State, with President Muhammadu Buhari handing over the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag to Senator Andy Uba in the Villa as the party’s candidate in the November 6, 2021 Anambra election.
Prior to this event, there was controversy surrounding the election as a result of INEC’s decision to remove the names of a few candidates, a decision that was hotly fought all the way to the Supreme Court.
The names of other hopefuls from sections within their parties were changed with those of Charles Soludo and Valentine Ozigbo, the two most prominent candidates who were ousted as APGA and PDP flagbearers, respectively.
All of the impacted candidates went to court for restitution and received their party’s mandates returned. The race has now officially begun, with experts claiming that it is now in the home stretch.
According to a senior government official, the initial removal of the candidates’ names caused severe obstacles.
It had an impact on the candidates’ plans and slowed down their campaigns. This allowed people like Godwin Maduka of the Accord Party, who had quit the PDP, to set the ground for the election.
With that out of the way, all of the candidates’ paths are now obvious. It appears that this is a four-horse race. Andy Uba of the APC, Valentine Ozigbo of the PDP, Charles Soludo of APGA, and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of the YPP will be the candidates to succeed Obiano.
Andy Uba will be riding high on the wave of Abuja’s support. However, based on prior governorship elections in the state, Abuja may have little influence because the people of Anambra already know who they want as their next governor. In prior elections in the state, APC candidates have struggled.
Given his family’s alleged complicity in the kidnapping of Chris Ngige, the state’s previous governor, Andy Uba’s chances may be limited during the coming Anambra election.
With the PDP split, Valentine Ozigbo may have a difficult time, as most members of the other group have promised to thwart his ambitions by casting their ballots for any of the other three contenders.
Senator Ifeanyi Uba may face a tough battle for the keys to Government House in Awka.
When he was unable to get tickets from the major parties, he ran for Senator on the platform of the Young People Party (YPP).
Given his strong grassroots presence in the state and his enormous youth support base, he could pull the strings. He has been able to propel his desire to a major level by using his sporting interests and business enterprise.
In this race, Charles Soludo remains the man to beat. He is the state’s flagbearer for the ruling party. After serving as Governor of the Central Bank, he has the necessary experience and relationships.
According to records, the state’s past two governors, Peter Obi and Willie Obiano, both came from the finance or banking sector. According to players acquainted with the politics of the state, this has aided them in successfully managing the state’s resources.
