In a bid to hold on to power after 2023, the ruling APC has secretly endorsed Goodluck Jonathan, ENigeria Newspaper learnt.
According to a thorough study undertaken by ENigeria Newspaper, former President Goodluck Jonathan has decided to defect at any time following heavy lobbying, particularly from the Northern block of the All Progressives Congress – APC.
ENigeria Newspaper has learned that this is part of the ruling party’s plan to keep power at all costs after President Muhammadu Buhari’s term expires in 2023.
Recall that the APC has been hobnobbing with the former Nigerian President for the past two years, including paying him a visit at his Bayelsa State mansion just after the previous Bayelsa State gubernatorial election, which saw Duoye Diri emerge victorious.
Again, ENigeria Newspaper has it on good authority that defection was part of the deal struck between Goodluck Jonathan and the Buhari administration, provided all the corruption allegations leveled against his administration were to be gradually abandoned.
Even though the former President has yet to make an official declaration about his defection, an investigation by ENigeria showed that Femi Fani-Kayode – FFK – has played a key role in ensuring a smooth transfer when the time comes.
“FFK has been holding talks on behalf of former President Goodluck Jonathan, which is why he has been spotted visiting state governors in the North and South under the pretense of mending bridges and holding talks across board for the good of the country,” a source told our Abuja correspondent.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been visiting Aso Rock on a regular basis recently, holding closed-door discussions with President Buhari, including acting on the President’s reconciliatory body to look into the unrest in Mali and other troubled African countries.
Jonathan was once again seen in the company of APC bigwigs at Yusuf Buhari’s wedding to the daughter of the Emir of Bichi in Kano State days back.
ENigeria discovered that the wedding ceremony was really a smokescreen for the Bayelsa-born politician’s defection plan, as he attended many closed-door meetings with Northern policymakers shortly after.
So far, indications suggest that the North has backed Goodluck Jonathan rather than Tinubu or Osinbanjo as earlier being rumoured.
“Because the APC is under pressure to zone the Presidential ticket to the South, the Northern bloc needs to back a candidate like Jonathan, whose presidency they can easily penetrate and control.”
“Again, there is a permutation that Jonathan’s successful emergence in 2023 would have projected a picture as if the North kept to the bilateral arrangement of zoning the Presidency, so preparing the stage for an arriving Northern President in 2027,” a source told ENigeria Newspaper.
The recent defections of Senator Stella Oduah to the APC, as well as the present defection of APGA lawmakers to the APC in Anambra State, are all planned measures to lay the ground for Jonathan’s defection at any time, according to a top APC official.
Another political source informed ENigeria Newspaper in Abuja that “the supposed unrest in the Peoples Democratic Party – PDP is allegedly a creation of the APC to destabilize the party as the race for 2023 tightens.”
