Brief History of Richard Saturnino Owens, designer of Ricky Owens shoe
Richard Saturnino Owens (born November 18, 1961), better known by his stage name Rick Owens, is an American fashion designer based in Paris. He was born in Porterville, California. Owens also has a furniture line and a variety other diffusion lines in addition to his primary line.
Rick Owens was born and reared in the California town of Porterville. John and Concepción “Connie” Owens are his parents. Connie is a Mexican woman. Owens grew up in a strict Catholic family.
He traveled to Los Angeles after graduating from high school to study art at Otis College of Art and Design for two years before enrolling in pattern-making and draping classes at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. This led to a job in the garment sector, where she designed knockoffs of brand clothes.
Owens first opened a store on Hollywood Boulevard in 1994 to debut his apparel collection. In 2003, he moved to Paris with his girlfriend Michèle Lamy, whom he married in 2006, and established his home and atelier in a historic five-story building that had previously housed the offices of former French President François Mitterrand.
Since then, his runway shows have been held in Paris. Owens and Michèle Lamy founded Owenscorp in 2004, and Owens likened their business alliance as “asking a gypsy to organize a battle with a fascist.”
Owens’ ‘Prehistoric’ series was shown at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London in 2013.
In this seven-piece collection, Owens’ color palette ranges from white to black, stopping nowhere in between.
“The show’s title, ‘Prehistoric,’ refers to the show’s theme, the origins of humanity, and also conjures up images of a mysterious old civilisation. It has a spiritual ritual, archaic ceremony, and great power aura about it “.
Owens has received the Perry Ellis Award for rising talent in 2002 and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. He has also received the Cooper-Hewitt Design Award for fashion design and the Fashion Group International Rule Breaker Award in 2007.
At the 2019 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards in June, Owens was named Menswear Designer of the Year.
Owens has written three books: L’ai-je bien descendu?, published in 2007, Rick Owens, published in 2011, and Rick Owens Furniture, released in 2012, followed by two volumes about Larry LeGaspi, published by Rizzoli in November 2019.
Rick Owens, DRKSHDW, Rick Owens Lilies, Slab (Defunct), and HUNRICKOWENS were among his five labels (previously “Palais Royal”).
“Subhuman Inhuman Superhuman,” his first museum show and retrospective, which spans over 20 years of his career, debuted on December 15, 2017 at the Triennale di Milano.
In 2018 and 2019, he teamed with Birkenstock and Veja, two French footwear brands.
Owens’ fashion show in 2019 was dedicated to Larry LeGaspi, whom he considers his artistic forefather.
“For me, as a teenager growing up in Porterville, California, what Larry LeGaspi did was a huge thing—the way he infiltrated middle America with this subversive sensibility connects with soul culture—black soul culture and music of this stuff coming together was very important to this kid in Porterville,” he said of Gaspi in his fall and winter 2019 women’s runway collection.
“I do think of Larry’s as a kind of biblical story… about the splendor of lust and sin, which I talk about a lot, but also about dissipation and decline,” she says. I wanted to be dissipated when I was 15 years old.
