Lagos private estates and neighbourhoods have come under EFCC attack ENigeria Newspaper can now report.
The surge of irresponsible breaches of people’s privacy by personnel of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission – EFCC has elicited an outraged reaction in Lagos, according to ENigeria Newspaper findings.
Dorathy Bachor, a former Big Brother Naija housemate, raised an alarm on Monday afternoon when EFCC officials barged into her residence about 4 a.m., ostensibly looking for internet scammers known as yahoo guys.
Although the EFCC hastily issued a statement in an attempt to justify what many have described as a barbaric act, ENigeria Newspaper understands that some men of the power drunk anti-graft agency returned to Dorathy’s apartment on Monday evening on a rampage, harassing her friends and family members for filming their earlier invasion and circulating it online, and in the end she was arrested too.
Remember that the EFCC, led by Abdulrasheed Bawa, has recently become known for invading the privacy of Lagosians without a fully executed search warrant in the guise of cracking down yahoo boys.
Only a few weeks ago, ENigeria Newspaper reported that men from the anti-graft agency were widely mocked on the internet after storming into the Parktonian Hotel in Lagos and harassing customers and international businessmen.
The EFCC has been terrorizing notably in private estates and other rich neighborhoods such as Banana Island, Ikoyi, VI, Lekki, Chevy View, Ajah, Magodo, and Isheri Magodo, among others, according to ENigeria Newspaper investigation.
The EFCC’s actions have also been criticized by eyewitnesses as reckless, harsh, and unprofessional each time they enter a neighborhood.
“They broke in brandishing weapons at you, no questions, no answers, all they will say is handcuff him,” Adefemi (not actual name), a lawyer who was previously a victim, narrated.
“When they stormed into my apartment in a posh neighborhood where I reside, I was pounced on and assaulted without being given an opportunity to express myself, all I kept screaming was I am not a thief, what have I done, and they kept beating me because I resisted them at first,” Adefemi said.
“After giving me the beating of my life, they handcuffed me and threw me into their truck, and it wasn’t until I identified myself as a lawyer that I was released and they apologized.”
According to reports, the EFCC has been invading Nigerians’ privacy for several weeks in the southern areas of the country, with officials storming into hotels and residential units without knocking, bringing anguish to vulnerable naked housewives and young girls.
The unchecked operations of members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad – SARS led to the #Endsars nationwide protest, which saw Nigerian youngsters flock out to vent their displeasure, blocking key routes across the country for weeks, according ENigeria Newspaper recalls.
Concerned citizens warn that if the EFCC’s actions, which have been a source of increasing concern, are not properly monitored, Nigerians may rebel, resulting in the breakdown of law and order.
Meanwhile, the EFCC’s pronouncements continue to rationalize the behavior of storming in on nude men and women, claiming that it is essential since some Internet fraudsters have perfected the practice of using women as shields to avoid capture.
The EFCC justified breaking into Dorathy’s apartment again on Monday evening, claiming that only people who have something to fear would be concerned about invasion of privacy.
